On the 18th of March the fourth edition of the Granfondo San Remo–San Remo “La Classicissima” will take place. A date that can’t be missed by all those who are passionate about cycling, and actually in place on the calendar on the day following the race contested by the professionals in the Milan – San Remo race.
New in 2018
There will be a new formula this year that will involve two routes: the long course of 115 Km, with a differential in altitude of 1850 meters, and a medium one of 80 Km, with an altitude differential of 1000 meters. Both sections of the race will start out together at 9:00 a.m. in Piazza Cesare Battisti.
During an initial part with the two sections combined, the participants will go through Ospedaletti, Bordighera and Camporosso, and then to Val Nervia (Dolceacqua, Isolabona and Apricale) and in Valle Argentina (Vignai, Badalucco and Taggia), the routes will divide with the medium group heading directly to the finish line set at the top of the legendary Poggio, while the longer distance group will enjoy the thrill of the Cipressa (the other mythical ascent of the Milan – San Remo) after going through Riva Ligure, Santo Stefano al Mare and San Lorenzo al Mare. Before the arrival at Poggio passages through Terzorio, Pompeiana and Castellaro are also planned.
“The hope is to have 600 registered athletes at the Start – according to Fabrizio Fusini, President of UC San Remo – we have designed two routes in order to provide an opportunity for every level of preparation: a medium one that is suitable for everyone, with the climb of Bajardo, which although long, has gentle, easier slopes, ideal for a day that is not cold because of an absence of cloud cover, and then a longer route for those who are more advanced in their preparation, one that has all the characteristics of a finish on a mixed track ”.
Therefore a holiday for cycling, but also a chance to enjoy the territory itself which all cycling enthusiasts drawn to the Riviera will be able to admire in all its most attractive areas. The roads of the interior in fact lend themselves perfectly to a day of sport along an amazing route, that only a few hours before will have challenged the professionals.
The event will also have an important touristic aspect, favoring those who have a passion for cycling and decide to stay a few more days ( participants are expected to arrive from all over Italy and also from overseas). They have the possibility of being able to cheer the champions on the 17th March, and then the day after testing themselves on the same roads.
“We expect cyclists to come mainly from the north of Italy and from France, although in the last editions we also had participants who came from further away, for example from England – added Fusini – in the last few years there has also been an increase in the number of female participants”. And everyone who takes part will be given a race pack containing both local products and those specifically for the sport.
The race will be followed by rescue vehicles including ambulances and mechanical services. At the Palafiori in Corso Garibaldi, which will function as the logistical base of the event as well as the location for prize-giving, hot showers will be available for the participants, who will also be able to enjoy the unmissable pasta party.
